Bread from Pågen is a climate smart alternative. We fokus on offering fresh bread with a long shelf life to minimize the risk of food waste in homes, even if we bake without preservatives.
Climate-smart bread
Bread is one of our most climate-smart foods and has a similar climate footprint to legumes, pasta and other plant-based food. Bread from Pågen has a low carbon footprint because it is baked mainly using Swedish grains which have a low climate impact. This is partly because of the high ratio of raw material per farmed area and through high environmental requirements on cultivation.
No preservatives - but long shelf-life
Many people wonder how our bread can stay fresh for so long. The answer is that we have very high hygiene requirements in our bakeries. For example extra clean air, good routines for cleaning equipment and strict hygiene rules for people in the bakery. No one touches our baked bread before it’s packaged. That way we can bake all our bread without preservatives. Even the sourdough we use in all our bread makes it last longer. The long shelf-life is very important to us, since it helps reducing risk of food waste both in homes and in stores.
Fresh tastes good
Most people want their bread fresh. That’s why we bake bread every day, every week, all year around. Studies in Sweden show that around 8 out of 10 people feel that bread that has been frozen is not fresh.
Many people want to freeze their bread at home, which is good because it decreases food waste. 70 % do not want to freeze bread that has already been frozen and is defrosted in stores.
At present there are no clear labelling rules that make it easy to see if bread has been frozen on its way to stores, which makes it difficult for consumers to make conscious choices. To help our customers we have a clear label on the packaging that shows you when our bread was baked.
In Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Germany, Pågen delivers fresh bread to grocery stores without freezing it first. A very small part (2%) of our sales are products sold through Swedish wholesalers to caterers such as schools and hospitals. These products, and products to the market in Norway, must be frozen for logistical reasons.

Quality in focus
Food safety is very important to us and we continuously check the quality of our products: when the dough is ready, after baking in the oven, and during packaging.
Both our bakeries are certified according to FSSC2200 and have very high hygiene requirements, which helps ensure our products last a long time and reduce the risk of waste.
Bread – good for your well-being
Eating bread with every meal is an easy way to refill energy and get the dietary fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals your body needs. Many of our bread types contain whole grains that have several positive health aspects and about a third of our bread is keyhole-labelled, a label designed to help you make healthy food choices and find healthier options.
We think it is important that you can make conscious choices based on your own needs and preferences, which is why our packaging has clear content labels.
